My timing belt on my car broke, but now cylinders might be damaged too. any advice?
The mechanics told me that my timing belt broke yesterday while driving, which hey, happens after a while…but they then also said..theyre hoping it didnt damage the cylinders, because then they need to be replaced too, and he recommended a few other parts to POSSIBLY be looked at replaced like a few other belts, water pump etc.
First off, I want to know…what the chances are of the cylinders being damaged and need replacement for something like..a timing belt..breaking, and then..
if the other parts are still okay but they "recommend" to eventually do it or even now and said "its up to me"
what should i make of that?
My car is a dodge 2005, and I just hate it because it always gives me problems, and no matter how well I take care of it, it seems to give me problems.
no matter what i do. it’s ridiculous.
also what would be the costs associated (with or without labor, ur choice if ur educated enough on that),..
with each thing.
the timing belt.
the cylinders,
water pump., other belts, etc?
THANKS!! mucho appreciation!
not the cylinders, the valves ! cylinders is where the pistons goes up and down in. if the belt breaks and the valves are opened then the piston can ram into the valves and bend them. now once the piston comes up and meets the valve it can punch a hole in the piston.

It’s hard to tell without replacing the belt and doing a compression check. They can do a borescope check for major damage, but that won’t tell them if the valves are just bent a tiny bit.
You usually replace a water pump when it starts leaking. It’s not a routine item.
Replacing old belts and hoses wouldn’t be a bad idea on an over 100,000 mile old vehicle.
I wouldn’t do anything before replacing the belt and seeing if it’s damaged.
You didn’t say how many miles you had. If you ignored the recommended period for timing belt replacement it’s nobodies fault but your own.

Somewhere in your dash there was a light on which said "SERVICE ME" quite a while ago. If you just bought it, then you should have replaced the belt anyway. the light may be disabled! There are people like that out there. The other items are probably legitimate, as the car has obviously NOT been well serviced. It’s probable that the water pump is driven from the cam belt, so it’s an ideal time to replace it. O’wise, there’s a lot of work to be repeated sometime soon. Give consideration to a used motor, with the new belts, pump, themostat and hoses-it may be cheaper than the repairs.
